Marianne Holzmann (anamed representative for Mozambique and Angola) travelled to Mozambique at the end of 2009 and visited 6 out of 8 newly formed anamed projects in the northern and central part of the country. She writes:

Several NGO´s in Mozambique are using anamed as a tool to serve the poorest of the poor. The anamed training conducted during the period 2007 to 2009, has led to a rapid increase in the number of organisations working with anamed plants, literature and products. Many people across the country are using anamed remedies for common ailments.

anamed Milange/Zambezia province is starting afresh. After a period of slow progress due to changes in staff, the church leadership has now emphasised the importance of the medicinal plant project because of the great benefits for the local, rur

anamed Errego and Mulevala/Zambezia province, Ile district is strongly supported by the church leaders of the Igreja Evangelica de Christo. The small anamed pharmacy in Errego is producing and selling anamed products (ointments, tinctures, medicinal oils and teas) in the district. The current local government and medical personnel are in favour of the project and are making use of Natural Medicine, especially the Artemisia tea which has proved itself to be very effective in treating uncomplicated malaria. Anamed Errego had a good harvest of Artemisia leaves at

the beginning of 2010. With the 20 kg of dry Artemisia leaves about 570 patients can be treated for uncomplicated Malaria.

In Munapo anamed has a small Pharmacy called “ O bom samaritano”. They have a big variety of anamed products which are sold in the locality. A further anamed branch was started by Myriam Wahr in Memba.

ADPP Itoculo invited anamed for a second time to their Human Resource Centre to conduct a seminar. Anamed is included in their community development work, alongside their water and sanitation programmes. The medicinal garden is very well looked after and they grow moringa, neem, papaya, artemisia, aloe and many other medicinal plants. It was surprising to see their guest houses named after medicinal plants, such as Neem Tree, Artemisia, Aloe vera, Moringa oleifera, etc.  Contact: cajito(at)tdm.co.mz

In 2007 Marianne Holzmann conducted four week-long seminars in Mozambique.
The following appreciation was received from C. W., the Health Programs Manager of Food for the Hungry, Mozambique. (names abbreviated to initials)

“Dear Marianne, I have heard really wonderful things about the training you did with our staff. I am so encouraged to know that it had an impact far beyond what I had imagined. I was worried that churches would think we were promoting witchcraft, and look at this with suspicion, but S. and others have assured me that the effect has been just the oposite, as people are now free to use herbal remedies without consulting the witch-doctor, who normally invokes spirits as well as preparing plants for treatments. Churches have even asked our organisation to provide training for them, as they see this as an economical way to treat illnesses. M. shared that he used to go the the village carrying Paracetamol/Tylenol, but now he can point out the plants that people can use for their aches, pains, fevers and coughs. Our agriculture programme has been promoting artemisia, so we are multiplying that plant and sharing it with the communities so people can even treat malaria quickly and immediately in their homes.

Thanks so much for the example, teaching and friendship you have shared with our staff this past year. I know it has changed us for the better.”seminar programme - small
